Overview
Chemistry 346 labs include opportunities to become familiar with basic organic chemistry information sources. Each lab introduces you to specific chemistry resources and tools important to organic chemists. You may also wish to use My WebSpace (https://mywebspace.wisc.edu) to temporarily store your documents as you search the literature and learn to insert chemical drawings into documents. You will use RefWorks in Lab 2 to format a bibliography.
Each lab has its own Lab Supporting Information document to be included with your lab report. For each lab you will download the Supporting Information document, edit it, and turn in the document as part of your lab report. If you store the document in your My WebSpace account, you can access the document at any time - such as while experiments are running.
Information concerning all three projects will be presented in class, through the lab manual, and on the Chem 346 Library Course Page (in your My UW account).

For more information about organic chemistry information, see Organic Chemistry Subject Guide.
Lab 1
Lab 1 Supporting Information document
In the first session you will:
- Locate material safety data sheets (MSDS) for commercially available compounds.
- Search Beilstein database by structure to identify property data sources.
- Use My WebSpace (or your own portable storage device) to store documents for future editing.
Lab 2
Lab 2 Supporting Information document
In the second session you will:
- Search SciFinder Scholar for the Registry Number for piperine.
- Locate research references pertaining to piperine in SciFinder Scholar.
- Formulate a research question related to piperine based on SciFinder Scholar search results.
- Save pertinent citations in SciFinder Scholar tagged output format (sample set).
- Import SciFinder Scholar citations into RefWorks, a web-based citation management tool.
- Use RefWorks to print a bibliography in the ACS output style.
Lab 3
Lab 3 Supporting Information document
In the third lab, you will:
- Search Web of Knowledge for articles which cite a key paper.
- Locate a citing article in UW-Madison Libraries.
- Describe how that article employs the key paper.
